Mr. Alonzo J. Davis, Sr., a beloved husband, father and teacher passed away September 21, 2016.
Mr. Davis, 78, was born December 31, 1937, in Biloxi, Mississippi to the late Evander and Cora Davis. He was a faithful and dedicated member of New Bethel Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and fun loving teacher and will be remembered for the many lives he touched. While he enjoyed bowling, barbecuing and cooking were his passion. Lonnie could also be found giving sound advice and telling his tall tales all day long.
Lonnie, as he was often referred, was a graduate of M. F. Nichols Colored High School. He went on to further his education at Coahoma Community College, and then onto Rust College, where he was a part of Rust’s male choir as well as a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in History. Lonnie began his teaching career at M. F. Nichols High, then went onto North Gulfport High and finished at D’Iberville High School, with a total of 36 ½ years in education.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruby Taylor, and Cora Murphy; and a brother, Albert Davis.
He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories his wife of 41 years, Bettye Davis; two daughters, Vernitia Burton of Derby, Connecticut, and Yolanda (Anthony) Hill of Biloxi; a son, Alonzo (Chandra) Davis Jr. of Newberry, FL; a sister, Melvina Smith of Biloxi; a brother Russell Davis of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren, Brittney Davis, Cepea Burton, Kenita Burton, Ebony Robinson, Kenya Davis, Kobe Summitt and Alazashia Davis; great-grandchildren, Jordyn Anderson and Khole Davis; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends in addition to several dedicated friends.
Services will be held Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the Gruich Community Center, 591 Howard Avenue, Biloxi. Viewing 10:00 - 11:00 with service beginning at 11:00. Friends unable to attend the services are invited to view and sign the guest book Tuesday, September 27, 2016, 4 - 6 PM, at Richmond-August Funeral Home.
