Former Chicago resident, Ethel Steen Bonner, 98, died September 25, 2019, at the home of her daughter in Pass Christian, MS. On October 25, 1920, Ethel was born to Walter and Jenny Powe Simpson in Stateline, MS. She joined in holy matrimony to Angle Bonner on December 4, 1948. They raised three loving children.
For the majority of Ethel’s career, she worked at a paper mill factory. Later, she retired from the Chicago Public School System as a food service worker. She served many years on the Usher and Mother Board at Greater Progressive Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Eric B. Brown, Sr. In her free time, Ethel enjoyed quilting, sewing, puzzling, and cooking.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Angle Bonner; her parents, Walter and Jenny Powe Simpson; three brothers, Walter Simpson, Jr., Crawford Simpson and Will Simpson; four sisters, Azaline Garrett, Janie Winborn, Hazel Melson, and Ollie Johnson; one son, Roosevelt Lee Bonner.
She is survived by two daughters, Joyce A. Hall, Pass Christian, MS, and Phyllis P. Hicks, Chicago, IL; eight grandchildren, Venus (Larry) Williams, George (Diane) Toney III, Clayton (Mercedes) Jacobs, Darrell (Raquel) Bonner, Terrence Bonner, Melvin Hicks Jr., Kevin Hicks and Christopher Bonner; eleven great-grandchildren, Shamika (Daron) Ray, Marcus Toney, Lamar Chapman, Whitney Williams, Shawn Knight, Jeremiah Williams, Summer Jacobs, Skylar Jacobs, Darrien Bonner, Diva Bonner, and Dash Bonner; three great-great-grandchildren, Adarian Ray, Arial Ray and Adin Ray; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ethel S. Bonner will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2019, at 12:00 PM at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church.
