Iona Robinson

March 13, 1951 — November 11, 2021

Iona Robinson

Iona “Skeet” Robinson was born on March 13, 1951, in Biloxi, MS to Gloria Robinson and Henry Robinson, Sr. Iona attended Elizabeth H. Keys High School in Ocean Springs, MS until her senior year when she transferred to Ocean Springs High School. Iona received her GED in 1971 prior to enlisting in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) at the age of 21.

Iona honorably served as a member of the US Army Medical Command for 22 years (and 4 days), attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). She fostered a love of travel with her military service taking her overseas to Germany and South Korea. Following her retirement from military service in 1994, Iona returned to her beloved hometown of Ocean Springs, MS. She continued her career of service as a civilian with the Biloxi VA Medical Center until her retirement in 2007.

Not one to sit still, Iona pursued multiple hobbies. She enjoyed creating ceramic art pieces to decorate her home, and her love of music spanned decades and genres. She spent countless hours curating scrapbooks of her grandchildren and expressed her love for family and tradition through cooking and baking. As a self-proclaimed sports “fanatic,” Iona enjoyed cheering for her New Orleans Saints and Pelicans and travelling to the games whenever she could. Iona remained an active member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Ocean Springs, MS until relocating to join her daughter and grandchildren in Alexandria, VA in 2017.

Iona closed her eyes for the final time on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, 2021, surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gloria Robinson and Henry Robinson, Sr.; three brothers, Henry Robinson, Jr., Louis C. Gipson, Jr., and Fletcher Gipson; and one sister, Karen A. Gipson.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Amber (Tariq) Robinson-Bond of Alexandria, VA; granddaughter, Xola Bond; grandson, Nziyo Bond; her brothers, Carl (Sheila) Robinson of Long Beach, CA and Greg (Shari) Gipson of Ocean Springs, MS; her sisters, Brenda Marshall of Lawrence, KS and Gylinda (Ken) McElroy of Vallejo, CA; and a multitude of other relatives and friends who loved her dearly.
