John Edward Canty, Jr.

John Edward Canty Jr. was born in Sumter, SC on January 10, 1949, and was the son of John Edward Canty Sr. and Wilhelmenia Hammond Canty. John departed this life on October 8, 2020, at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. John received his early education in the schools of Sumter, SC. He graduated from Nichols High School in Biloxi, MS. Also, John attended Jefferson Davis Junior college in Biloxi, MS, where he trained for his job at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS, and worked for over 20 years. John leaves to cherish his memories John and Wilhelmenia Canty of Sumter, SC; two sons Michael (Legretta) Canty of Birmingham, AL and Lieutenant Colonel John Edward Canty III of New Orleans, LA; one sister Roslyn (Charles) Canty-Brown of Sumter, SC; four brothers Chief Master Sergeant Retired Leroy (Tracey) Canty of Valrico, FL, Dr. Michael (Connie) Canty of Flatwoods, KY, Jerry (Lisa) Canty and Michael Donnell Canty of Sumter, SC; three grandchildren Desiree’ Canty of Philadelphia, PA, Torey Canty of New Orleans, Michael Canty of Fayetteville, NC; three great grandchildren Samiyah Al-Amin of Philadelphia, PA , Jatory Canty of New Orleans, LA and Kyven Rumph of Birminghan, AL; six aunts Mary Slater of Tampa, FL, Evelena Brunson, Annie Mae (James) Choice of Sumter, SC, Rosa (James) McNeil of Baltimore, MD, Mary (William) Evelyn of Bronx, NY, Jessie (Frank) Gipson of Alcolu, SC; two uncles Benny Glenn of Westbury, NY and Lee Ernest Hammond of Bronx, NY; Special niece Ruby “Tina” Stallworth and his ex-wife Judy Canty; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, London and Geneva Walters Hammond Scarborough, and paternal grandparents, Edward Canty and Pearl Canty; sister Linda Darnell Canty Nelson and Aunt Thelma Glenn. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 11:00am at Infinity Funeral Chapel, visitation will start at 10:30 am.
