Laura “Meme” Mae McDonald-Casey passed peacefully from this life to her permanent home the morning of May 21, 2019. Living a “longevity” life that she shared with so many, we embrace the memories and exhilarating times spent with her. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life.
Laura “Meme” was born in Jones County, Summerland, also known today as Taylorsville, Mississippi. She moved to Biloxi, Mississippi and the remainder of her life was lived in California. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Taylorsville, Mississippi and later became a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Biloxi, Mississippi, where she also Ushered, under the leadership of Reverend C.M. Holloway. During her adult life, she worked as a professional cook-housekeeper and was a talented knitter, crocheter and seamstress in Biloxi, Mississippi. Eventually retiring, spending time and visiting with family from Coast to Coast.
Laura Mae McDonald-Casey was the youngest child to the late O.C McDonald and Leona Thigpen McDonald and stepmother, Martha McDonald.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Elbert Casey; brothers: Rev. Sam McDonald, John McDonald, George McDonald, James Tommy McDonald; sisters: Allie Williams, Corine Owens, Alline Posey, and Ben Lilly Crosby.
Laura or “Meme” is survived by her son, Dennis Ray Hicks, Sr. and daughter-in-law, Etta Watters-Hicks; seven grandchildren and spouses: LaMonica (Ronnie), Dietra (Eric Sr.), Dennis, Cedric, Amelia; twenty-three great-grandchildren and spouses: Lamarr (Toyin), Roemel (Quwannah), Damario, Euniece (Bryan, Sr.), Shariece (Pendarvis), Naya, Delitha (Van), Eriesha (DeAndre’), Eric Jr., Derek, Sam (Mercedes), Isaiah (Demetria “Meme”) Sr. Matthew (Renee), Lamar Ray; sixteen great-great-grandchildren: ZetaStarr, Zetarri, Paislei, Kimaria, Eceinue, Bryan Jr., Lena, Pendarvis II, Paris, Jimmie’, Gizelle, D’Andre’, Charles, Mekhi, Isaiah Jr., and Mathis.
