Mary L Richmond

Mary Lee Richmond, 77, resident of Pass Christian, Harrison County, Mississippi passed away on April 23, 2019, at University of South Alabama Medical Center due to complications stemming from a house fire that she suffered on April 14, 2019.  Mary was born in Haynesville, Alabama on July 31, 1941.  She was the daughter of James Adam Givan of Haynesville, Alabama and Annie Lee Robinson of Calhoun, Alabama.  Mary attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College where she received her associate's degree in nursing and 1984 she then went on to receive her bachelor's degree in nursing in 2000 from the University of Phoenix. Mary spent her life working, serving and helping others as a nurse.  She retired from Hancock Medical Center in 1991 as the employee health nurse supervisor.  When she started working at Hancock Medical Center, she played a major role in starting the treatment programs of patients with AIDS as well as ensuring that the nursing staff was properly educated and attending various nursing home symposiums and conventions to ensure that the patients were receiving the best of care.  She worked in the nursing profession for over 50 years.  It was no easy feat that she worked her way up from the bottom as a housekeeper, to nursing assistant, to licensed vocational nurse, to registered nurse.  She has worked in every facet of the healthcare industry as a nurse in hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes.  This extends from a nursing supervisor, department supervisor, clinic supervisor, staff nurse, wound care and various other positions throughout the nursing profession.  She was never afraid to do whatever it took to ensure that patients got the best care possible.  She was also available to assist her staff whenever it was called for whether it was providing patient care, covering when someone was sick, or working late and extra shifts.  She enjoyed volunteering at the nursing home, providing diabetic and health care classes to the community. Mary, also known as "Rosie Red" was preceded in death by her father, James Givan, and mother, Annie Adams, her brothers:  Leroy Givan and Gene "Slim" Adams, and her granddaughter, Cora "Brandy" Hatcher. Mary or "Rosie Red" is survived by her four children:  Larry, Leon, Rodney, and Derek; sisters: Rose Harrington and Claudine Ellington; brother James Givan.  She is also survived by several adopted children; 30 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.  Mary also leaves to cherish her memory numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other friends and relatives.
