Mattie L. Wells

Mrs. Mattie L. Wells, age 68, was born in Columbus, MS on November 23, 1944 to two loving parents: Mr. Charlie and Mrs. Ethel Haywood Jones. She departed this life, entering her eternal rest on March 3, 2013 in Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Wells accepted Christ at an early age. She volunteered at church, and served in various ministries for many years. She was a member of El Bethel Baptist Church in Columbus, MS, and also taught Sunday School in Black Mountain, NC at Thomas Chapel. Mrs. Mattie later joined Main Street Missionary Baptist Church in Biloxi, MS., and enjoyed volunteering there. She loved learning and growing under the direction of Pastor Kenneth Haynes, Sr. Mattie was married to Mr. Jesse Wells, who preceded her in death, after 33 years of matrimony. They had eight beautiful children together. Jesse R. Wells, Jr., their first born son, who preceded his mother in death; Dorothy R. Wells, Jesse Wells, Susan Wells James, Sarah E. Wells Ganzy, Jesse B. Wells, Rushell Wells, Tori Wells, and Evelyn Wells. She also leaves one brother, Bobby Jones of Columbus, MS and a sister, Geneva Larrie from Miami, FL. Mrs. Wells and her husband raised their family in Columbus, MS until September of 1995 then moved to Pascagoula, MS. They were welcomed by hurricane Elena! Mr. and Mrs. Wells then moved their family to Biloxi, MS where they resided for many years together. Mrs. Wells' husband died in 1997 and was buried in Biloxi, MS. She continued to live in Biloxi until hurricane Katrina in 2005. Afterwards, Mattie decided that the hurricanes were just too much for her and was prompted to relocate to Stone Mountain, GA for one year. Mattie discovered she didn't like the heat, so she moved to Black Mountain, NC in 2007 and worked for YMCA for many years. Mrs. Wells loved living in the beautiful mountains and the cool climate. She moved to Conyers, GA in December 2012. Mrs. Mattie Wells was a Culinary Artist by trade. She and her husband loved to cook. This is a skill they both passed on to their children. Mrs. Wells worked at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS for many years. She was also employed with Blue Ridge Assembly YMCA for several years where she prepared food for large conferences. Later, when Mattie moved back to Black Mountain, NC in 2007, she worked in hospitality and housekeeping during her last years. She enjoyed watching game shows and above all Mattie loved her family with all of her heart. Mrs. Wells was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in June of 2012. When they caught the disease, it had already spread and was in stage 4. Mrs. Wells was a strong and courageous woman. When the doctors gave up on her, she kept holding on to God's hand. She didn't give up on God. When the doctors told her they couldn't do anything else for her, she moved to the Metro Atlanta area in December of 2012, to try to get treatment for her illness. Mrs. Wells encouraged many people on her journey and with her strength she showed how she fought this great battle. Her greatest desire was that anyone who smokes, especially her family, would quit before the terrible disease would attack them in the same way it attacked her. She lost her battle with Pancreatic Cancer on March 3, 2013. Funeral Services for Mrs. Mattie L. Wells will be held Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Main Street Missionary Baptist Church at 10 a.m. The family has entrusted the care of Mrs. Mattie Louise Wells to the professional staff of RICHMOND-AUGUST FUNERAL HOME.
