Maurice Troop, was born on January 5, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to the proud lineage of James Otis Troop and Carrie Mae McClinton, departed this life on August 22, 2024, in Biloxi, Mississippi. His journey, though it began in humble beginnings, was one marked by profound impact, unwavering principles, and a deep love for family, honor, and legacy.
Maurice was not just a man of substance; he was a man who stood firmly on the bedrock of his beliefs, never wavering, always resolute. Raised by his loving parents and the nurturing hands of Viola Beard, Maurice carried with him the values instilled by these strong figures throughout his life. A proud graduate of Central State University in Ohio, he went on to serve his country with distinction as a United States Army veteran, embodying the very essence of duty, honor, and sacrifice.
A man of remarkable intellect, Maurice was a 33rd-degree Mason, a title that symbolizes the pinnacle of dedication, wisdom, and service to others. He believed deeply in the power of giving back and was committed to creating a legacy that would endure far beyond his years. His tenure at the V.A. Medical Center in Oklahoma, where he served with dignity and excellence, was a testament to his character and his unwavering commitment to helping others.
Maurice was a man of many facets—known for his sharp sense of humor, his insatiable curiosity, and his genuine eagerness to learn from those around him. He was meticulous in everything he did, demanding order and justice, not just in his own life but in the lives of those he touched. Maurice lived with purpose, every decision a reflection of his deeply held values, every action a testament to the man he was. Those who knew him best would tell you he was stubborn, yes, but that stubbornness was born out of love—love for his family, love for his friends, and love for the life he lived so fully. He was the one you could always count on, a rock in the storm, a man who would stand by you no matter the challenge.
Maurice's legacy is carried forward by his beloved children, Keywonda T. (Smith) Troop of Woodbridge, Virginia, Olyvia L. Troop of Frisco, Texas, Sylvia L. (Clark) Troop of Elgin, Oklahoma, James O. Troop of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Dariana C. Troop of New Orleans, Louisiana. His spirit lives on in his sister, Chalice Ann (Winston Jr.) Cooperwood of Maumee, Ohio, and his brothers, James R. (Shirry) Lockett of Okolona, Mississippi, and Phillip H. Beard II of Bala Cynwyd, Philadelphia. He leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren—Shanice Troop, Danielle Jones, Desiree Smith, Marvin Wilborn, Arianna Wilborn, Kayla Wilborn, and Saint Troop—each a testament to the legacy he so deeply valued.
Maurice is preceded in death by his father and mother, James Troop and Carrie Mae McClinton; his mother figure, Viola Beard; His "sweetheart" Maxine Simpson, his grandfathers, James Lockett, Sr., Olie Troop, and Robert Hammock; and his brother, Edward G. Lockett.
In the end, Maurice Troop was not just a man; he was a force—a beacon of strength, wisdom, and love in a world that too often lacks these qualities. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives, and an enormous circle of friends, each of whom was touched by his kindness, his integrity, and his unwavering commitment to those he loved. A special acquaintance, Maxine Evans, will also carry his memory in her heart.
As we remember Maurice, let us honor the man he was—a man who lived with purpose, who stood ten toes down in every decision he made, and who leaves behind a legacy of love, honor, and unwavering resolve. Rest in power, Maurice. Your life was a testament to what it means to live fully, to love deeply, and to leave a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know you.
