Rita's impact on her family and loved ones was profound. Their tribute to her is as follows:
“This has taken me a long time to write, but being late was our thing, so one last for the road, ok? With love from me to you. Growing up you and I were more like sisters while Alice was alive. Her death shot us in different directions, always somehow finding each other. For 48 years I have loved you. My longest human connection thus far and yours too. Today we say goodbye. How strange and the exact opposite of what I want. You were kind and loved all living creatures from the sky to the sea. You were brave, never backed down and always found a solution. You were strength. Your creativity flowed in art, building, woodwork and fundraising who’s voice you stood tall for. You moved mountains. You were a friend, a mother, a sister in blood and connections, a wife, a daughter, a grandmother, an aunt and a shining light for those in overwhelming sadness. We built a house, many businesses, sold art, rescued animals, preached truths, shopped, danced, grew up, shared immense pain and immense joy, laughed, cried, fought and reconciled, because love is forever and family comes first. I finally gave you grandchildren, you loved them and they loved you. You filled many hearts and at times were sorely misunderstood, your intentions still just wanting to help and with the best intentions . You suffered silence many times with unseen pain and still found the time to give to others. You protected the environment, helped save the islands bats, the dolphins, the horses, the numerous dogs and cats, iguanas, you name it and yes even people thank you. When we think of the mark we will leave we often wonder what it will be. You left a hole way too soon that can never be filled by another. You were amazing and simply put a force to be reckoned with and the fire in your belly still burns bright in us. We will love you forever. Your daughter, your grandsons, your fur granddaughter and your baby Wallo.
I love you ... is what I always want to tell you. You were my girlfriend, my wife, my friend and my partner.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your life, for all your teachings. You were always noble, a warrior, defender of the weakest ... always intelligent and sweet.
Thank you for the wonderful moments we shared, for your love and your infinite characteristics.
It is not easy to write to you with a broken heart; You will always be in my life and in my family since the first moment she received, with love as a daughter, sister and aunt. You leave without fulfilling the family dream of a few days together.
No one will occupy your space now you are one more orchid in the heavenly garden.
I love you my love. From your husband and your mother, sister and niece in marriage, yet still every bit family in our hearts, far away in Colombia."
