Rosetta E. Briggs

Mrs. Rosetta “Eunice” Payton Briggs was born in Vancleave, Mississippi on January 17,1945, to the late Reverend Freeman Payton & Annie Lee Payton.  Out of eleven children, Mr. & Mrs. Freeman Lee shared within the union of their holy matrimony, Rosetta was the seventh. Vancleave, MS would become her chosen residence. She accepted Christ at an early age. On January 8, 2022, the celebrated life and legacy of Mrs. Rosetta “Eunice” Payton Briggs expired here on this side of glory as she enthusiastically and joyfully met her LORD, Savior and Redeemer Christ over in Eternal Glory, her new home-He promised and eagerly prepared for her called, Heaven.

In 1963, she graduated class, ‘Valedictorian’ from Elizabeth H. Keys High in Ocean Springs, MS.  After graduation, Rosetta met and married the extraordinaire love of her life, Mr. Edward Briggs, on August 20, 1963.  Fifty-eight years of blissful marriage yielded four (1 daughter and 3 sons) beautifully blessed children. As a chosen to stay at home mother, Rosetta was afforded both personally, passionately, and spiritually rear and raise her children in the ‘Fear & Admonition’ of the Lord! One of her most highly prized priority was ensuring that her family (Gift from God) became her first ministry. After numerous years of putting family first, Rosetta was now ready to live on purpose, live for God’s purpose and use that purpose to give God all the glory.  A passion to heal, care and minister hope to the hopeless-a cry that called and one that she answered; lending her acumen to the Medical Field. Rosetta Eunice Payton Briggs attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) Jackson & Jefferson Campuses where she earned a degree in Nursing.  A sum total of her collected work experiences and expertise includes but not limited to working at Howard Memorial Hospital, Ocean Springs Nursing Home, and Ocean Springs Hospital. GOD not only was glorified, but He also received the best of her work, skills and services that others would see her light so shine!

Psalms 121:1-2, “I’ll lift up my eyes unto the hills. From whence cometh my help. My help comet from the Lord, which made heaven and earth,” is one of her favorite Scriptures.

Rosetta had been a lifelong member at Good Hope Baptist Church (GHB) until she joined her Lord.  Faithful until death, as a Woman of God, she served in various capacities: the Program committee, Youth department, Vacation Bible School, and the Kitchen Ministry all while being a member at GHB Church.  She also served as Secretary of Deaconess, President of Nursing Guild, President of Pastor Aide, Secretary of Home Mission, President of Senior Choir and Secretary of Sunday School in affiliation of a whole host of other auxiliaries. In addition, Rosetta Eunice Payton Briggs was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Gulf Star Chapter #130, Prince Hall Affiliation (PHA).

Preceded in death by her parents Rev. Freedman & Annie and four siblings: Elizabeth Coleman, Odell Payton, Melvin Payton and Edward Payton; also some nieces and nephews.  Rosetta Eunice Payton Briggs, leaves deeply and devoutly to cherish her memories, legacy and faith: her devoted husband, Edward Briggs of 58 years, 4 children: Sherra Lavelle Briggs Wells (Dwight) of Hurley, MS, Shaund Terrell Briggs (Cheryl) of Atlanta, GA, Shanald Tremayne Briggs, Sr. (Aurora) and Shannon Trevor Briggs, Sr. (Teayra) both of Ocean Springs, MS; 11 grandchildren:  DwunShae McSwain (Phillip Jr.) of Hattiesburg, MS, Zaviaire Sahib Briggs, Zachaeus Sincere Briggs both of Atlanta, GA, Dwight Wells, Jr. (Paige) Waukee, IA, Tyra Migai Briggs of Hattiesburg, MS, Shanald Tremayne Briggs, Jr. of Ocean Springs, MS, Shannon Trevor Briggs, II of Ocean Springs, MS.  Brandon Jamal White Fort Bragg, NC, Anthony Agostini (Crystal), Marielena Martinez all of Hobart, IN, Destiny Marshall of Bakerfield, CA, 10 great- grandchildren: Zion Briggs of Atlanta, GA, KayDen Wells of Waukee, IA, ZayDen Briggs of Atlanta, GA, Maxon Wells of Waukee, IA, Phillip McSwain III of Hattiesburg, MS, Zola Briggs of Atlanta, GA, Cassidy Denise White Atlanta, GA and Eden Gabrielle James-McSwain Picayune, MS, Ariana Agostini, Amaya Agostini, Mia Martinez of Hobart, IN, Jaycee Marshall, of Bakerfield, CA 6 sisters:  Pearlie Williams of North Chicago, IL; Irene Ramsey of New Orleans, LA; Sarah (Willie) Haggerty of Houston, TX; Mary Batts of Houston, TX; Olevia Payton of Waukegan, IL; and Florita Fairley of Virginia Beach, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
