Mr. William Burnett Oliver, affectionately called Percy, was born on July 18, 1929, in Biloxi, MS. He passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 91.
He was born in Biloxi, MS, on July 18, 1929, the son of Willie James Oliver and Ola Mae Ramsey. Percy attended Our Mother Sorrows (OMS) where he received a high school diploma and later attended Jackson State University on a scholarship to play basketball. Percy Oliver married his high school sweetheart Helena Geraldine Wallace on October 16, 1951.
Percy spent his working career in the military where he served 24 years in the United States Navy and the Air Force. While in the service he deployed to the South Pacific during the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, and other countries. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1972. After retirement, he worked at Ingalls Shipbuilding as a Logistic Planner. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards with friends and family. An active member of the Vernon Gilbert Elks Lodge #576, Biloxi MS, where he served as House Chairman. Brigadier General in Ventress Johnson Antler Guard department, a former member of the Mississippi State Association of Elks, and a former member of IBPOEW National Association of Elks holding the title of Past Grand Exalted Ruler.
Percy was preceded in death by his mother, Ola Mae Watters, father, Willie James Oliver, and Stepfather, George Waters
Percy is survived by Helena Geraldine Oliver, a devoted and loving wife of 69 years, three sons: William (Cynthia) L. Oliver of Ocean Springs, Marvin B. Oliver of Ocean Springs, and Marshall (Angelia) G. Oliver of Waldorf, MD; one brother: James Henry Oliver of Ocean Springs; three nieces and nephews: James H. Jr, Jamie, and Ivory of Baton Rouge LA; eight grandchildren: LaToya (Pinoc’ Chio) Hopson, Marcus Oliver, Leslie Oliver, William Oliver II., Linsay Oliver, Justin Oliver, Haley Oliver, Marlen Oliver, five great-grandchildren: Marcel Hopson, Talia Hopson, Jailen Oliver, Gianna Hopson, Maurice Gentry, and many other relatives and friends.
A wake will be held at Infinity Funeral Home on Sunday, November 1, 2020, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Services will be held at Infinity Funeral Home on Monday, November 2, 2020, at 12:00 PM with viewing beginning at 11:00 AM
Interment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
